Hinode Trip Overview

A new style of paper making that fits the contemporary lifestyle—KAMISUKI. Kamisuki is a method of paper making which you lay kozo bark fibers side-by-side and wait for them to dry up and become a paper. Based on that traditional method, a method called “paper making with a towel” was invented. Copying down the pile fabric of a towel to the paper, a distinct designed washi (Japanese paper) can be made. In this plan, you will make a small-sized LED washi candle using the towel washi paper.

Itinerary

There are a number of places in Japan where you can make a simple washi, yet the experience offered here is quite unique and distinct as you can start from making raw materials for paper.

First of all, you will batter into fibers a kozo branch whose skin is already peeled and then soaked in water. This first phase of making fibers is pretty important in the whole process of making the craft work on the day. Moreover, you will feel the connection between the regional resources and the washi making, through loosening the fibers in the water beside the well in front of our atelier.

Next you will pour the washi fiber on to the toweling, wring water out of towel, and let the washi paper dry. The surface of the wash will get traces of pile fabric and gain an original texture with warm feeling. You can take the washi home and create your original craft work.

Then you will create a unique candle using the towel washi. Not an actual candle flame but a small LED lamp will be used. Make a stylish lamp shade with the towel washi, place it around an LED lamp, and a washi candle whose light flickers like a candle flame is completed.
