Handa Buddhist Temple and Somen Noodle Brompton Bicycle Tour

Tsurugi Trip Overview

At Handa’s Jinguji Temple (reservation required), you can take it home as a souvenir, keeping the Buddha depicted in the Buddha experience. It is a good opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and cleanse your heart. After experiencing Jinguji, take a walk in the Handa Basin and head to the Handa Somen Factory (reservation required) while looking at the countryside, the Taisho period wooden architecture and the former Kitamuro Clinic. The thickness and strength of Handabe Somen Noodles, which has a history since the Edo period, has nothing to the right. Depending on the time of the factory, you can experience somen noodles. For souvenirs, I recommend the very thick solder somen.

Itinerary

Traveling by Brompton bicycle, you first visit Jingu-ji Temple in Handa. Here you can try drawing a Buddha and writing a kanji charm that you take away as a souvenir. This is a great opportunity to sit in the main hall of a historic Shingon Buddhist temple and concentrate on a task designed to clear your mind. You can also try copying the Heart Sutra.

After your experience at Jingu-ji Temple, you head on foot to a surprisingly fascinating factory making Handa somen noodles. On the way you take in the elegant wooden architecture of the Taisho period such as the former Kitamuro Clinic.

Handa somen has a history going back to the Edo period, and nothing compares to the thickness and toothsomeness of these handmade noodles. Depending on the time, you can also see the noodles being stretched skillfully with chopsticks. We recommend taking some of these thick noodles with you as souvenirs.
