What to Expect When Visiting Shinagawa City, Tokyo, Japan

Learn how to make mochi, Japanese rice cakes made with glutinous rice. This 3-hour course will teach you how to make mochi the easy way, You’ll get a hands-on experience of touching mochi and shaping it into various desserts. At the end of the course, you will be able to taste the Mochi with a bowl of Matcha, green tea. (Other fruit will be used in case strawberries are unavailable).

The class takes place in a private home located within walking distance from Meguro or Gotanda Station of the JR Yamanote Line or the metro station. You will be greeted by the instructor who will start off by explaining about mochi and how it is made including the ingredients. Then you will learn how to make strawberry daifuku mochi, followed by mochi ice cream and three-color dango (mochi on skewers). The instructor will also show you how mochi is made using a machine and you will be able to taste it with various toppings.

Most materials are plant-derived with the exception of Mochi Ice Cream which uses dairy products. A vegan option is available where the ice cream will be substituted by non-dairy ice cream.

The class with conclude with a tasting session. You will learn how to make a bowl of matcha to accompany the sweets. (Other drinks are available if you cannot drink matcha)

The instructor who is a certified Nerikiri Art Instructor is very fluent in English so she will be able to give you some insights on the local life as well as advice on where to shop or go sightseeing in Tokyo.

• Mochi Ice Cream – Mochi with an ice cream filling (1 pc).
• Three-color Dango – Mochi balls on skewers (2 pcs).
