Sapporo Trip Overview

This is a full day trip to Lake Shikotsu and Lake Toya from Sapporo.

Lake Shikotsu and Lake Toya are a part of Shikotsu-Toya National Park and a picturesque crater lake with famous hot spring resort.

First, we’ll drive to Lake Shikotsu, and visit visitor center to learn about the National Park. After the short hike along the lake shore, we’ll take a short walk at Bifue Kyoboku-no mori ( Virgin forest in Bifue)

W’ll then visit Lake Toya, famous caldera lake. After having a lunch at the local restaurant, we’ll take a cable car to go up Mt.Usu to see a crater.

Stop At: Lake Shikotsu, Chitose Hokkaido

Lake Shikotsu, the closest national park to Sapporo, is located 90 minutes outside of the city. After Akita Prefecture’s Lake Tazawa, it is the deepest and clearest lake in Japan. It is also Japan’s farthest north open water lake. Surrounded by beautiful mountains such as Mt. Eniwa, Mt. Fuppushi, and Mt. Tarumae, the area offers various sites such as the Yacho-no-Mori bird sanctuary in addition to campgrounds. There are also many places to eat local food in the hot spring area.

Stop At: Bifue, Chitose, Hokkaido 066-0285, Japan

Take a walk around the virgin forest on Biei.

Stop At: Date, Date, Hokkaido

Kinoko Okoku, which means Mushroom Kingdom, is a speciality gift store and shopping center. There is also a restaurant inside offering a menu of unique Hokkaido food and mushroom-based dishes.

Stop At: Mt. Usu, Hokkaido

Mount Usu is a volcano which has erupted four times in the past 100 years. Its most recent eruption occurred in the year 2000. The Usuzan Ropeway brings you close to the volcano’s summit. Breathtaking scenery from observation platform, which include Mt. Yotei, Lake Toya, Oshima peninsula, and Pacific ocean.

Stop At: Lake Toya, Hokkaido

Lake Toya is a caldera lake that was created by a major volcanic eruption that took place tens of thousands of years ago.
It has a perimeter of about 36.5km, and in the center lie four islands: Oshima, Kannon-shima, Benten-jima, and Manjuu-jima.
