Dotonbori to Very Local: A Small Group, All-Inclusive, Authentic Evening

Osaka Trip Overview

Get your Dotonbori fix in, but then leave it all behind as we venture into more local, then MUCH more local neighborhoods and their restaurants across not one, but two different parts of Osaka. “Tachinomiya,” or standing-bar restaurants in the tapas style, tee us up a cavalcade of small plates and drinks that can only be described as splendiferous, spell checks be damned. Between these tasty stops, explore local culture at night with an entertaining native (or honestly equivalent) speaker at your side. And with groups limited to six or less, you can be assured of personal attention. This also allows us to patronize smaller, truly local restaurants, unlike the big corporate restaurants some of those other guys frequent, where it seems like everything is fried and mildly disappointing.

Come join a tour that’s not just about great food and drink, but about connecting you with genuine local culture and making you LOVE Osaka as much as we do. Your foodie night adventure awaits!

Itinerary

Stop At: Dotonbori Tsuribori, 1-6-9 B1f, Dotombori, Chuo, Osaka 542-0071 Osaka Prefecture

Start your evening at this iconic bridge that crosses the Dotonbori (Doton Canal). Here, and in the nearby warren of tiny streets, we’ll talk about everything that does not now, and also the long, storied history of the area as well. Any worries that your guide for the evening was simply going to shuttle you between restaurants will be swiftly dispelled here! We love sharing stories and entertaining our guests with the magic of Osaka.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Namba, Namba, Chuo, Osaka, Osaka Prefecture, Kinki

Our first restaurant stop for the evening is here in Namba, which borders Dotonbori just to the south. A vibrant entanglement of restaurants, taverns, and bars, all alongside a colorful (and sometimes downright flashy!) assortment of somewhat aging architecture, makes this a must-see neighborhood for those who know where to go. Our restaurant stop is sure to be entertaining and delicious, with locals undoubtedly looking to chat up our small group, and a large variety of small dishes to choose from. We don’t have set menus, so it is our pleasure to order items that adhere to any dietary restrictions you may have. We encourage a bit of culinary adventure, but don’t force it on you. Food and drink is included in your tour, so you needn’t worry about any mystery charges popping up.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Amagasaki, Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture, Kinki

A brief train ride takes us to Amagasaki, a part of greater Osaka that few (approximately zero) visitors venture to. This has been a classic working class neighborhood for many a decade, but over the years the face has changed to reflect the lessening of factory jobs and an appreciation of how close Amagasaki is to central Osaka. As we explore areas on and off the well-known, lengthy covered shopping street, you’ll learn about Amagasaki’s identity, get some great people watching in, and even briefly stop by a shrine for some traditional cultural enrichment. The main event, however, will be the two restaurants we visit. Which ones we choose may vary by evening, but they are always a blast, and always have great food.
