Nikko Toshogu is a shrine where the first Tokugawa shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, is enshrined. It is the general headquarters of Toshogu in Japan, and the official name is “Toshogu”, but it is called “Nikko Toshogu” to distinguish it from other Toshogu. In the precincts, there are sculptures of monkeys that express the famous “No evil, no evil, no evil”, as well as animal sculptures and statues scattered throughout the precincts. This is a royal residence used by the emperor and prince for three generations from 1899 to 1922, and is a group of architectural buildings with the architectural styles of Edo, Meiji, and Taisho, and the combined use of these buildings at the beginning. With 106 rooms, it is the largest wooden building in the Imperial House built during the Meiji era and is the only building where the main residence still exists.
