Sawara, a 30 minute train ride away from Narita Airport, is a city in which you can enjoy beautiful historical townscapes of the Edo Period (1603-1868).

There is an Important Traditional Building Group Conservation Area in the center of town, and you can row down the river to get a great view of it. In Sawara there is also the house of the man who made the first map of Japan, a traditional festival recognised by UNESCO and the head shrine of several hundred Katori Shrines in Japan.

As there is a lot to cover on this tour, you will use bicycles as a means of transportation. If you are flying into or out from Narita Airport, we recommend this tour!

SAWARA Tourism Information Center: You will rent your bike here. Now your tour in Sawara has started!

Sawara Machinami Exchange Center: Traditional handscraft of Sawara is exhibited here. You can also have a brief calligraphy experience!

Boat tour of Little Edo Sawara: We will get on a hand-rowed boat and slowly look around the river! Enjoy the tastefull town around river while feeling relaxing wind during Summer or while warming in a table with electronic heater during Winter!

Historic house of Ino Tadataka: The building where Ino Tadataka, the first Japanese who wrote a map of Japan, lived in the Edo era still remains! It was used around 1762 and it has a kitchen, a study hall, and a space for business!

Nakamuraya Shoten: A knick-knack shop with a diner built in 1855 which is located in the center of the city! Let’s have lunch at a tasteful diner!

Suigo Sawara Float Hall: A float hall related to the festival of Sawara which is a world heritage. There is a huge float and you can take a picture with a traditional cloth for festivals on!

Katori Shrine: Let’s cycle through a vast rice field heading to a big shrine! The head temple of Katori shrine, there are 400 hundreds of them in Japan, waiting for you!

Tokun Sake Brewery: They have been making sake for a long time from tasteful pure water. Let’s take a look at the brewery and learn where and how sake are made!

Suwa Shrine: There are steep stairs behind the gate of the shrine. Don’t bother yourself climbing it up since it is beautiful enough below the stairs!
