This tour will give you a deep understanding of the unique environment born through Japan’s largest active volcano. Plentiful, crystal-clean groundwater that gushes forth from natural springs to support lives and enable flourishing agriculture.
Visit a small remote society of only 13 households that exist surrounding the natural spring of Tateiwa. Explore the stunning nature in this area and get to know some of the local people who live here. Together we harvest vegetables and prepare local cuisine for lunch using fresh ingredients.
After we leave Tateiwa, we will make a quick visit to another place that is enabled by the volcano and symbolic for the area, a hot spring. And this is not any old onsen, we will head to “the most embarrassing onsen in Japan”!
Our last destination is a young farmer who lives by utilizing the blessing of clean water of Mt. Aso. He protects the original way of growing Shiitake mushroom on natural wood. Something possible thanks to this unique environment.
