Pontocho is a historic narrow alley located in the heart of Kyoto. It is one of Kyoto’s most well-preserved traditional entertainment districts. Pontocho runs parallel to the Kamo River, stretching between the Sanjo and Shijo Streets in the city’s central Nakagyo Ward.

Centuries ago, this area east of the Kamo River was nothing but a rest stop for the pilgrims on their way to Gion Shrine (modern day Yasaka Shrine). Today the Gion district of Kyoto is known for its charming, historic atmosphere and strong ties to the world of traditional Japanese arts, making a visit to this area one of the best things to do in Kyoto.

Shirakawa district, located north of Gion, is found along the small Shirakawa Canal, crossed by picturesque bridges and lined with weeping willows and cherry trees. In spring, the pale pink of cherry blossoms and the green willows form a delightful contrast. On both sides of the canal, the cobbled streets with their traditional wooden houses, called machiya, and tea houses, called ochaya, seem to transport visitors to the past. Occasionally the sound of the geta (wooden sandals), of the geisha and maiko (apprentice geisha) treading the cobbles will pull you from your reverie.

The Kamo River (鴨川, Kamo-gawa, duck river – see onomastics) is located in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. The riverbanks are popular walking spots for residents and tourists. In summer, restaurants open balconies looking out to the river. There are walkways running alongside the river, and some stepping stones that cross the river. The water level of the river is usually relatively low; less than one meter in most places. During the rainy season, however, the walkways sometimes flood in their lower stretches

It is located outside of Heian-kyo. It runs as if it were following the east outer edge of the construction of Odoi Fortress, built by Hideyoshi TOYOTOMI. It was opened during the early Edo period when the downtown expanded to the Kamo-gawa River (Yodo-gawa River System). It extends from Aoibashi-Nishizume in the north to Jujo-dori Street in the south. North from Aoibashi-Nishizume, the street has a different name: Shimogamo-hon-dori Street. The area along the street between Sanjo-dori Street and Shijo-dori Street is Kyoto’s central shopping and entertainment district, having pedestrian paths covered by an arcade.
