People come both to pray and to pick a fortune slip based on lines in the Tale of Genji, hoping their marriage will fare better than the protagonist’s. The romance lingers in the trees nearby, where one mysterious holly is actually the product of two intertwined trees. This “Renri no Sakaki” tree is the subject of one of Kyoto’s Seven Myths.
