Stop At: Shofuku-ji Temple, 6-1 Gokushomachi, Hakata, Fukuoka 812-0037 Fukuoka Prefecture

Shofukuji (聖福寺, Shōfukuji) has the distinction of being the first Zen temple constructed in Japan. It was founded in 1195 by the priest Eisai, who introduced the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism from China into Japan. Although the temple buildings cannot be entered, visitors can walk through Shofukuji’s attractive temple grounds and observe the buildings from outside.

Stop At: Tochoji Temple, 2-4 Gokushomachi, Hakata, Fukuoka 812-0037 Fukuoka Prefecture

The largest seated wooden image of Buddha in Japan.

Tochoji temple was founded in 806 by Kobo-daishi Kukai and it is the oldest temple of Shingon sect in Japan that Kobo-daishi set up.
It is also known as “Tocho-mitsuji Temple”. It is said that Kobo-daishi, who returned to Hakata after undergoing ascetic training in China called Tang back then, prayed for the eastward dissemination and perpetuation of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism.

Kushida Shrine is one of the oldest shrines in Fukuoka. Famous for its Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival, this shrine offers other amazing sights such as the biggest Otafuku mask in Japan and a well where you can pray for eternal youth.

Hakata Doll is one of most beautiful and famous arts and crafts in Japan, also are well-known in the world. Shogetsudo is a famous Hakata dolls shop, where you can try Hakata Doll Painting. You learn about the origin and history of Hakata dolls with fine and expressive faces and try your hand at decorating dolls (about 1 hour). Here you can also find Hakata dolls made by the professional artist and items suitable for souvenirs. Those who wish to see Hakata-ori can visit the third floor of the same building.

Hakata’s oldest shopping street has about 130 shops lining a 400-meter long arcade. This is the standard Hakata walking course, featuring gift shops selling traditional Hakata dolls and other items, shops specialized in Yamakasa goods, stores that offer products from the Genkai-nada sea, ramen restaurants, famous red bean sweets, and so on.
