Stop At: Tenshukaku Observatory, 889 Ogimachi, 荻町 Shirakawa, Ono District, Gifu 501-5627, Japan
This observatory overlooks the village of Shirakawago. 95.7% of the village area is covered with forests, and it is a place where you can easily see that it is surrounded by high mountains. This is the place you definitely should visit when you come to Shirakawa-go.

Stop At: Shirakawa-go Tajima House Sericulture Museum, Japan, 〒501-5627 Gifu, Ono District, Shirakawa, Ogimachi, 字中屋2643番地の2
This is a special building that was built by the traditional method called “Gassho-style”. There is the secret of sericulture and gunpowder making, but the director at the building can tell you directly. He/she explains carefully while adding video.

Let’s finally enter the Gassho style building. The house took 10 years to complete, and it has more than 160 years of history. You can feel the lifestyle of Gassho-style from the exhibits that were actually used.

This is the largest Gassho-style house in Shirakawa-go. It is designated as an important cultural property built about 300 years ago. It is surprising that people still live in this house. The Kanda family and the Wada family that you will visit earlier are also relatives.

This is an open-air museum that preserves the buildings of the disappeared settlement. The state of life and the process of the declining population are displayed in newspaper articles and videos.

This is not a Gassho style, but built in a traditional Japanese style. Pillars and beams from a Gassho style building were used and it has a modern Japanese interior. The combination of wood and glass is what makes this house so beautiful.
